Nov meeting and upcoming events

Currow Cycling Club Meeting 07/11/11
Tom Kenny will register the club with Cycling Ireland for the coming year.
The Christmas Party is confirmed for the 17th of December. Venue and numbers for this event are unconfirmed. Gareth Lawless will book venue and negotiate price. Members will receive confirmation as soon as possible.087 9072776
The Day Care Centre in Castleisland will be presented with a cheque for the proceeds of our Charity Cycle on Friday the 12th next at 7:30. Refreshments will be provided and all members are encouraged to attend.
Club spins remain the same for the winter months, with Wednesday evenings at 7:00, departing from Castleisland and Sunday mornings at 10:00, departing from Currow.
Every member is asked to attend the Sunday club spin on December the 4th next. It is hoped to attract new members by advertising this date and it is vital to have as many members as possible present in Currow at 10:00. Paudie McCarthy will coordinate a controlled and modestly paced route that is within everyone’s ability and suitable to anyone looking to start or return to cycling.
Events for 2012 are as numerous as they are widespread around the country. Members have expressed an interest in participating in such events, or creating our own, or even combining both, in an attempt to provide an incentive for goal-orientated training. This issue will be re-visited at a future date and all ideas are welcome and will be considered. The question of an internal league will also be considered.
All members are needed for regular club spins. In order to accommodate every fitness level, pace will be kept modest for an agreed duration and cyclists will be afforded the opportunity to abstain from keeping pace with stronger members. Routes will be chosen to allow the group to break, so that a modest pace will still be maintained, but also affording others the opportunity to increase the pace and get more from the cycle. Numbers are needed to make this work and every accommodation will be extended to individuals who turn up.
Please feel free to contact the club via the website, or myself on dlooney@mdoshea.ie with any comments or suggestions you would like to share.
Regards and happy cycling,
Darragh Looney
Hon Club Secretary

5th Annual DayCare Leisure Cycle

The annual Day Care cycle is taking place on Sunday the 4th of September at 10 am sharp from the Castleisland Rugby Club. It is the usual route which incorporates 10, 30 and 50 mile options that participants can decide on the day which one they wish to do. Minimum sponsorship or entry fee is 20 euro. Under 18s need to have parental /guardian permission to take part. We need to stress this year more so than other years that the event is not a race. There are numerous races coming up and there has been loads on during the year but this is not one of them as it not organised on the basis that people will be racing. This is primarily due to safety issues but it is also a day that people need to be encouraged along as there will be many new cyclists on the road for the event. If you feel that the event is too slow for you then you need to realise this now and we are asking you to use the day to cycle with others and encourage them along to finish the cycle which in itself is the achievement of the day in question. Sign on for the event is from 9 to 9.45 on the morning and refreshments will be provided on the route and at the finish where there will be entertainment provided. There is also a raffle for all sponsorships handed in at the start and various spot prizes. A new addition this year is a 5km walk starting 12.30pm with registration from 12 noon. Again minimum sponsorship or entry is 20 euro and it is hoped that people that would maybe not cycle would walk for this very worthy and local cause. We are looking forward to seeing you all on September 4th for an enjoyable and active day.

2011 Chain Gang Sportives

The Chain Gang Cycling Club, Tralee is happy to announce the 2011 Chain Gang Sportives!

This year we will once again be hosting, with the support of our event partners, a set of classic challenge cycles taking riders over the most scenic terrain offered by the Dingle Peninsula with two routes to test the legs and thrill the senses;

The Conor Pass Challenge – A classic 110km route takes this sportive cycle over the Conor Pass – Ireland’s Highest Mountain Pass on a scenic route then taking in Dingle, Annascaul, Inch and Castlemaine.
The Blasket Blast 150km – the second edition of this spectacular and challenging route. The route takes in the entirety of the peninsula over 150km, taking in the climbs of the Conor Pass and the spectacular coastal run around Slea Head.

To ease entrants’ registration and to allow for better event planning, on-line entry for the cycles has been set up for this year’s events via the dedicated event website: – http://www.thechaingangsportives.com – where you can also find complete route and entry details, FAQs, event news and more.

We are also delighted to have on board with us this year an event accommodation partner synonymous with Tralee, The Brandon Hotel, who has kindly offered special rates for those intending to travel to Tralee to take part in the sportives. Participants will be able to avail of 2 nights B&B including one evening meal for €99 pps or €45 B&B pps/night with plentiful parking, just a short distance from the event HQ at Kerins O’Rahillys GAA grounds and close to Tralee town centre.

While every effort has been made to include as much information as possible, if you have any queries about your route or the event don’t hesitate to drop a line at info@thechaingang.cc and we’ll do our utmost to see you right.

We aim to put on a great set of cycles this year, to build on previous years and pull out all the stops to put on what we endeavour to make a brilliant day on the bike.

We hope you will accept the challenge and join us this September in Tralee to take on what we feel are some of the best challenge cycles, in some of the most spectacular countryside both Kerry and Ireland has to offer.
