John Drumm Cup

Currow Cycling Club Press Release….

“44TH Anniversary of the Johnny Drum Cup”

Currow Cycling Club will once again host the Annual Johnny Drumm Memorial Cup on Sunday 21th June 2009. This race commemorates one of Kerry’s greatest cyclists, the late Johnny Drumm from Castleisland, who died tragically at a very young age.

The day’s event starts with contestants registering from 11.30 a.m. and the first road race commences at noon. A challenging and demanding route takes the racers out of Currow Village with an easy climb to Dicksgrove before turning left towards Scartaglen. Riders have a chance to make time on the gentle pull towards Buckley’s Shop before turning left into a moderate climb before entering Scartaglen Village. Riders will descend towards Castleisland on the R577 and turn left at Brown’s Hardware Store, before leaving the town heading back towards Currow Village. A further climb at Lisheenbaun greets the racers, which is followed by the fastest part of the circuit, a downhill sprint over the start/finish line.

The event is expected to attract top class road racers from all over the country and if last year’s event was any, to go by; each race will be keenly contested. The following Timetable will operate;

  • 12.00p.m. Under 16’s (Two Circuits)
  • 12.20p.m. Under 12’s (Modified course)
  • 12.30p.m. Under 14,s (One Circuit)
  • 2.00p.m Senior Race (Four Circuits)
  • 2.10p.m. Veterans (Three Circuits)

Currow Cycling Club members, with the assistance of members from Killorglin Cycling Club, will marshal the course and vehicular traffic is requested to cooperate with the directions of the Stewards and other road-side signs. Dog owners along the route are requested to keep all animals under proper control as loose dogs pose a serious risk to the safety of the competitors. Currow Cycling Club would like to acknowledge the co-operation and support of Kerry County Council Roads Department and Án Garda Síochána with organising this important cycling event in the county.
